LOWNDES COUNTY, GA (WTXL) — The City of Valdosta said it has renamed the Craig Center to the Jeanette Newbern Coody Warming/Cooling Shelter.

The shelter is located at 1104 W. Gordon Street and is expected to be a safe place south Georgians can go to in extreme heat and cold, officials said.

Jeanette Newbern Coody was a well-known philanthropist in the Valdosta community. She passed away on March 18 at 103-years-old.

“It is fitting that a facility designed to provide safety and comfort to people during times of need will carry the name of someone who dedicated so much of her life to helping others. This shelter will allow her spirit of compassion and service to continue touching lives for generations to come,” Interim City Manager Al Crace said.
