Bainbridge residents get long-awaited relief as 17-street paving project nears completion

Bainbridge neighbor Fanetta Close has lived on Evans Street for 26 years, and she said the road paving project now underway is long overdue.

"I said to myself, about time. Because when I was driving one day, it was on further down this street. You know, I hit a pothole, and it needed to be fixed, you know. And I just said, well, maybe the Bainbridge will get to doing something after a while. And sure enough, they did," Close said.

Evans Street is one of 17 streets being repaved as part of the City of Bainbridge's paving project, a street improvement initiative that will mill and resurface over 97,000 square yards of city streets across the community.

The project is funded through Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (T-SPLOST) and Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) funds.

Public Works Director Shannon Brock said streets with curbs and gutters were prioritized first.

"And that's because they were starting to deteriorate, but they had also been resurfaced maybe even two times in the past. So to have everything function like it should, curb and gutter and drainage, it was necessary to mill them down before we resurfaced them again," Brock said.

For Close, the improvements signal forward momentum for the neighborhood she has called home for nearly three decades.

"When you drive from one neighborhood to the next and one neighborhood to the next, and you see how the roads have been really bad and stuff. It just makes you feel really good to see that your town is growing and trying to do better," Close said.

With crews now working on the last 5 streets of the project, the city says road work is expected to be complete by the end of August.
