First Big Bend prison inmate tests positive for COVID-19, hundreds of inmates quarantined

24 employees test positive across Big Bend

(WTXL) — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in employees at Big Bend correctional facilities has doubled to 24 in just a week as hundreds of inmates in those same facilities are quarantined.

Across the state, 98 employees at Florida's correctional facilities have tested positive for COVID-19 as well as 123 inmates.

Locally, several other institutions have also reported employees testing positive for the virus:

Apalachee CI:
Confirmed cases: 5 employees, 0 inmates;
Quarantine: 1 inmate in security quarantine

Gadsden CF:
Confirmed cases: 8 employees, 1 inmate;
Quarantine: 1 inmate in security quarantine, 60 inmates in medical quarantine

Graceville CF:
Confirmed cases: 1 employee, 0 inmates

Hamilton CI:
Confirmed cases: 2 employees, 0 inmates;
Quarantine: 1 inmate in security quarantine, 1 inmate in medical isolation, 73 inmates in medical quarantine

Jackson CI:
Confirmed cases: 3 employees, 0 inmates

Jefferson CI:
Confirmed cases: 0 employees, 0 inmates;
Quarantine: 4 inmates in security quarantine

Liberty CI:
Confirmed cases: 1 employee, 0 inmates;
Quarantine: 1 inmate in security quarantine

Madison CI:
Confirmed cases: 0 employees, 0 inmates;
Quarantine: 1 inmate in security quarantine

Mayo Annex:
Confirmed cases: 0 employees, 0 inmates
Quarantine: 4 inmates in security quarantine

Suwannee CI:
Confirmed cases: 0 employees, 0 inmates;
Quarantine: 12 inmates in security quarantine

Taylor CI:
Confirmed cases: 0 employees, 0 inmates
Quarantine: 3 inmates in security quarantine

Wakulla CI:
Confirmed cases: 4 employees, 0 inmates
Quarantine: 6 inmates in security quarantine

"In order to protect the personal health information of these individuals, FDC will not identify the name or occupation of the employees at these facilities. Staff listed above may be employed by FDC or one of its contractors," officials wrote in a statement.

Any correctional employee who is symptomatic, or who has tested positive for COVID-19, will not be allowed to go back to work until a full recovery is documented by a medical professional and DOH and CDC guidelines are followed.

If an inmate shows symptoms of COVID-19, medical staff will place the inmate in medical isolation, pending DOH testing.

FDC has 145 facilities statewide, including 50 correctional institutions, seven private partner facilities, 17 annexes, 34 work camps, three re-entry centers, 12 FDC-operated work release centers, 18 private work release centers, two road prisons, one forestry camp and one basic training camp.
