MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) — Former Tropical Storm Chantal dropped into tropical depression-level strength late Wednesday night. The system is about 600 miles southeast of the Canadian Maritimes, moving east-southeast at 18 mph.

The system had been poorly formed since its initiation Tuesday night as a tropical storm. More weakening is anticipated for the rest of the week.

The system will remain over the open Atlantic Ocean, staying a long distance away from any land mass. A weak steering flow may cause Chantal to meander during this time.
