TALLAHASSEE (WTXL) - We're likely to see this Invest 90 near the Carolina coast form into a tropical storm within the next few hours. Though there is a lot of dry air feeding into the back side of the system, Hurricane Hunters flew into the system this morning and found 50 kt winds on the northwestern side of the system along with a relatively low pressure of 1006 mb.
The National Hurricane Center will have an updated outlook at 2 pm ET and with the new information from the aircraft reconnaissance, will be able to make a better determination of the likelihood of tropical formation.
Hurricane season officially starts June 1st, though it is not too uncommon to see tropical systems form in May. Since 2007, we've had 4 named storms form before the official start to the season--with even two forming in 2012.
