VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - So what exactly do you do if you find your home was broken into?

The Valdosta Police Department wants to remind the community how they can remain safe if there is an intruder.

VPD says people should keep a charged phone near them at all times.

If they hear someone breaking into the home, yell out that you've contacted the police.

If you can escape, do so. If not, lock your bedroom door and stay on the phone with police.

Valdosta police say the majority of the time burglars break-in when they think no one is home.

Police say you should leave your porch lights on and turn a lamp on inside the home so it's known you are home.

Be sure to trim down any bushes or trees that may prevent you from seeing inside your house.

And always have 911 on standby.
