(CNN) - Russia's ambassador to the U.S., who's at the center of probes involving possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign, is heading back home.
Sergey Kislyak is expected to step down as ambassador and return to Moscow soon. He had served in his post for nearly a decade.
Russian officials stress the move was "planned in advance," and had nothing to do with the ongoing investigation.
It was Kislyak's conversations with Michael Flynn that helped lead to Flynn being dumped as President Trump's national security adviser. And Attorney General Jeff Sessions is under fire for two meetings he had with Kislyak.
Current and former U.S. intelligence officials have accused Kislyak of being a spy, an allegation Russia denies.
