(RNN) - The National Park Service says visitors were able to see full rainbows on Wednesday at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
Although first afforded Federal protection in 1893 as a Forest Reserve and later as a National Monument, the Grand Canyon achieved National Park status in 1919, three years after the creation of the National Park Service.
The Grand Canyon National Park receives close to 5 million visitors each year, compared to an annual visitor total of 44,173 the park received in 1919. The South Rim of the park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The South Rim includes Grand Canyon Village and Desert View.
