ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE/CNN) - An Albuquerque, NM, police officer received a first-of-its kind award for adopting a drug-addicted baby. On Monday, officer Ryan Holets accepted the outstanding service to the community award.
But Holets said the real hero is his wife Rebecca who agreed to adopt the girl. "Didn't hesitate, because you know, she had to take a few seconds to understand what I just said, but she immediately said, ‘let's do this, this is a wonderful thing,’” Holets said.
Holets found the homeless and pregnant woman and a man using heroin near a store in September. Holets decided he wanted to adopt the unborn baby after meeting the pregnant mother who was addicted to heroin.
Baby Hope is now 8-weeks-old. The Holets have four other children, including a baby less than a year old, KRQE reported.
She spent her first few days of life suffering from withdrawals. She was born with an opioid addiction, Holets said.
