RAW: Girl taken from cave after multi-hour ordeal

Posted

SAN ANTONIO (KABB/WOAI/CNN) - Rescuers pulled an 18-year-old out of a cave after an ordeal that lasted more than 10 hours.

She became stuck when touring the cave with classmates on a guided high school field trip.

About 70 first responders helped free her from the space where she became stuck at about 2:40 p.m. Thursday.

She was trapped about 350 feet away from the entrance of Robber Baron Cave, a privately owned preserve, in a narrow passageway known as the "Hole in the Floor."

Authorities said she was conscious and alert during the ordeal.

They gave her medication to help her relax.

As the rescue continued, officials grew concerned that it could become a life-or-death situation when she slipped farther into the passageway.

None of the other students on the trip were injured.

"The first thing that she told her mom when she got out was, 'I didn't want to die in there,'" said Charles Hood, San Antonio Fire Chief.
