(RNN) – American rapper B.o.B is crowd-funding $200,000 to launch one or more satellites into space to prove that the Earth is shaped like a pizza and not a basketball.
The rapper, whose real name is Bobby Ray Simmons Jr. and sometimes calls himself “Flat Earth Bob,” has raised almost $2,000 as of Sept. 26. The campaign is trending on the GoFundMe site.
In a promotional video, he says he is “looking for the curve,” which echoes the theme among flat-earthers that if the earth were actually round, you’d be able to see the curve with the naked eye.
Some donors have been supportive, though others point out that mere satellites will not expose what they believe is a huge conspiracy foisted by NASA.
“ … YOU KNOW, YOU CANT GET TO “OUTER SPACE” IT ONLY EXIST IN NASA BASEMENT. WE CANT GET PASSED VAN ALLEN BELTS ?? OOPS I MEAN FIRMAMENT!!!! SHOW ME CURVED WATER, IS MY FAVE SAYIN!!!U ROCK B.O.B.111” commented Dawn Richards.
Some donors say they are doing so only to see B.o.B fail before the onslaught of knowledge from the likes of Bill Nye and Neil deGrasse Tyson, whom $10 donor Bjorn Pius called on to donate as well. Nye and Tyson are famous scientists and staunch proponents of the round-Earth theory.
Others just offered support, among them Karen Medina, who pledged $10, saying “To the truth … #staywoke.”
Global.com, a satellite phone company, says on its website that launching a satellite costs about $50 million on the low end to a high of about $400 million. Maintenance is also costly - a year of bandwidth is going to run about $1.5 million.
But those figures are based on the Earth being round.
