(RNN) – More than 50,000 inmates in New York’s prison system will soon receive free computer tablets.
The New York State Department of Corrections announced the news this week.
“[T]he department will provide each incarcerated individual a tablet at no cost, with the ability to access free educational material and eBooks, and to file grievances,” said Acting Commissioner Anthony J. Annucci Tuesday.
“Individuals will also have the option to purchase music and additional eBooks, and to use a secure email system to communicate with family and friends.”

No state funds are being used. A company providing the services will pay for the tablets and will make money on the sale of the music and books.
