LONDON (CNN) - Queen Elizabeth's husband, 96-year old Prince Philip, is retiring from the public spotlight.

On Wednesday in London, the duke will attend his last official public engagement with a Captain General's Parade of the Royal Marines. He is captain general of the commando force.

Prince Philip has accompanied the queen on her royal duties since 1952. He has supported a wide range of charities and is a patron or president of some 800 organizations.

The palace says the prince has conducted more than 22,000 solo public engagements since his wife became queen. Philip has had some health challenges in recent years, including a recent hospitalization in June for the treatment of an infection.

In 2009, he became the longest serving British consort.
