NEW YORK (WCBS/CNN) – Two New York City cops had to spring into a different kind of action on Easter Sunday.
They got a call that a woman was in labor, and she couldn’t make it to the hospital in time.
The father-to-be had called 911 and was doing his best until the officers arrived.
"We were flagged down by the husband that was already with her at the driver's side of the vehicle, and pretty much delivering the baby, in labor at that moment, so I actually stepped in and assisted the husband," NYPD Officer Stephan Koustoubardis said.
The parents were on their way to NYU Langone Medical Center in Murray Hill around 8 a.m., but had to pull over with 60 blocks still to go.
"We don't normally ... handle these kind of situations, and it feels great to help directly bring a new life into this world," NYPD Officer Vincent Chiang said. "It brings excitement to the job, so I'm looking forward for ... other things."
Chiang has only been on the force eight months. Koustoubardis has been on it for eight years. This was a first for both officers.
"Training kicks in, and you just become focused on doing what you got to do," Koustoubardis said.
The parents said the delivery lasted all of five minutes, but it wasn’t until the baby was finally safe in the hospital that everyone could breathe a sigh of relief.
"It feels fantastic. Honestly, it’s A natural-high feeling of being happy in life," Koustoubardis said.
