Mom delivers baby in Uber during rush hour traffic

HOBOKEN NJ (WCBS/CNN) – One baby girl decided to come three weeks early. The sudden labor was so unexpected, her mom and dad had to call a last-minute Uber to a Manhattan hospital during rush hour.

"It was very heavy traffic I was screaming, so he said we can just ask for help. My husband I said 'ok, I will go,' I said 'no you don't go,'" said Sathya Priya Senthil, the newborns mother.

There was no way the parents were going to make it to the hospital.

So, the Uber driver pulled over and called for help.

"I was in pain I felt the baby's head that was already out. I was telling them the baby is out," said Senthil.

Senthil laid down on her husband’s lap, already mid-labor when the Port Authority police rushed over.

"They were sitting in the back seat. He said that he thought the baby was coming out, and within a few seconds the baby came out," said police officer, Krystal Armenti.

The baby girl was delivered safely weighing 6 pounds 3 ounces.

She and her family are now resting at Hoboken University Medical Center.

Despite all the commotion in the backseat of the Uber, the new parents say the driver stayed very calm.

"He was asking me basically, and then he pulled over and flagged a cop down. It's been a nerve-wracking day, an exciting day. I don't think we'll ever forget this day," said Karthik Lakshmanan, the newborn’s father.

The parents named their baby girl Sailakshmi, which means goddess of wealth and a quick minded nature.

Both parents say they are looking forward to introducing the baby to her eight-year-old sister.
