(WJLA/CNN) - A 20-year-old Marine shot and killed at the Marine Barracks while on duty early New Year’s morning.

Under investigation as an accidental shooting-- but as far as just how this fatal accident which killed Riley Kuznia occurred even his mother doesn't have an answer.

"No, no, we haven't heard anything. We don't have any details," said Markelle Kuzina, Riley’s mother.

Riley Kuznia grew up near the Canadian border in northwest Minnesota.

His mother Markelle Kuznia says he was a typical Minnesotan.

He loves to hike, fish and play hockey.

She says from childhood he dreamed of becoming a soldier.

And when he came of age, he decided he would be a marine.

"They're going to challenge me, they're the best. They're the hardest branch of the government, era of the marines and he said that's what I want," said Markelle.

D.C. police released an incident report when the shooting happened.

It stated that officers were called to the scene and found that one of the individuals present "had been handling a firearm."

Previous reports said officials do not think the fatal shot was self-inflicted.

D.C. police have said they cannot expand on the shooting investigation.
