NEW BRAUNFELS, TX (KABB/CNN) - There is purpose in Miguel Zamora’s mission of bearing a wooden cross over his shoulder.
“I gotta get there,” Zamora said of his walk to Sutherland Springs, where more than two dozen people were killed in a mass shooting Nov. 5.
He is pushing down each road highway and town carrying the cross, which he estimates weighing between 150 and 200 pounds. In total, it’s about 40 miles on foot from New Braunfels to Sutherland Springs. He is doing it for the victims.
“My stars, they represent my brothers and sisters that we have lost,” Zamora said. “I’m feeling tired, but I got a mission to do.”
That mission is to make sure Sutherland Springs doesn’t grieve alone. He has inspired others along the way, like Sutherland Springs resident Lupe Rodriguez.
“I was on my way home, and I saw Miguel out here, and I had to turn back to tell him what a great job he is doing, and just - he’s an inspiration to all of us,” Rodriguez said.
La Vernia resident Ann Wyss was also moved.
“It brought a lot to my heart to see someone doing something like this,” Wyss said. “It is a remarkable thing for him to do that.”
Zamora said these people have moved him, as well.
“When I need encouragement, people will stop, like just now, and that’s what keeps me going,” he said.
Zamora said people have even stopped to offer him basic necessities like food and water as he has made his pilgrimage. He said anyone who feels compelled is welcome to join him.
