(RNN) – Representatives for a shopping mall in Michigan apologized to a woman after mall security kicked her out for wearing a tank top and shorts.
On June 10, Hannah Pewee posted a photo on Facebook of her wearing a white tank top shirt with Dori the fish on it and cutoff jeans shorts. She wrote that someone complained anonymously to Woodland Mall security about her clothing – and there were other young women dressed similarly because the temperature was 90 degrees.
“I was out having a fun time with my sister and next thing I know, I’m out on the street. Slut-shaming how girls are dressed is deplorable and outdated, and it needs to stop,” she wrote.
The mall’s website said, "appropriate attire, including shirts and shoes, is required. Clothing with inappropriate words, phrases or graphics is not permitted and is subject to mall management approval." It does not say what is appropriate and what is not.
Pewee’s post has more than 7,500 shares and 650 comments, some from Woodland Mall responding to specific comments.
The next day, someone from the management team at Woodland Mall called Pewee and apologized. The mall is revising their clothing policy on their website to clarify what is acceptable attire.
The mall issued a statement to Midland’s newspaper that read: "We apologized to the shopper and the public for the way that this was handled. We've already spoken to her and are working to make things right. We work to create a fun and safe shopping and dining destination but failed to deliver on that message for this shopper. We're working internally to make sure we fully deliver on excellent experiences at our Mall immediately."
