Lincoln Memorial defaced with red paint

Posted

WASHINGTON, DC (WJLA/CNN) - Authorities are investigating after someone vandalized the Lincoln Memorial by spray painting “F*** Law” in red paint.

The graffiti was painted on a column of the memorial about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

“A witness may have been here around the same time at the Lincoln Memorial – there are people here all most all of the time, even in the middle of the night,” said Mark Litterest of the National Park Service.

To clean up the column, a preservation team is using a mild paint stripper that is safe for historic stone.

The Lincoln Memorial was not closed and tourists were visiting the site all day.

Earlier this year, a vandal or vandals used permanent marker on the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial, as well as street signs and utility boxes along the National Mall.
