Howard University students protest for 6th day

Posted

WASHINGTON (WJLA/CNN) – Tuesday was day six of a student protest at Howard University.

Progress has been slow in negotiations between the students and the school, but the protestors said they’re in it for a long haul.

Now in its sixth day, the sit-in is the longest student protest in school history, with a long list of demands. It started after revelations of embezzlement at the university’s financial aid office.

"I'm really proud of the work we are doing inside,” demonstrator Ahmari Anthony said. “I'm really proud of the culture that we've built."

HU Resist, the group organizing the protest, had another round of negotiations with members of the board of trustees today.

They’re the same trustees that demonstrators want to see resign, along with school president Wayne A.I. Frederick, according to a demand on their list.

"That is still something to be talked about,” Anthony said. “We haven't gotten to that demand yet, but when we get there it really depends on what the students want."

The demonstrators have nine demands. So far only the first, about extra housing, was met. HU Resist plans to occupy the administration building until all nine are granted and they have the support of most students.

"I admire their dedication and sacrifice to make this school a better institution," student Arthur Cribs said.

Fellow student Jaquial Durham also expressed support for the demonstrators.

"I think what these students are doing is a great form of resistance," Durham said.

Today, however, the university’s council of deans released a statement siding with the school president. Howard’s official alumni association recently did the same.
