(RNN) – The governor of Oregon has forgiven a young boy who admitted taking a hazel nut and a pen from the Capitol building during a class trip.

The boy wrote a note to Gov. Kate Brown admitting to the deed, accompanied by the pen and a dollar to replace the nut.

Brown responded saying, “Samuel, Thank you for your note of apology. On behalf of the people of Oregon, I accept your apology and forgive you.”

Samuel visited the Capitol with his fourth-grade class on April 19, his note told the governor.

“These things were not mine, and it was wrong for me to take them. I’m very sorry,” the note said.

The governor shared the encouraging story on her Facebook page on Thursday. She told Samuel, "Come back soon!"
