(CNN) - A former Fox News analyst said the channel is doing a "great deal of damage" to the U.S.

Retired Army Lt. Col. Ralph Peters left Fox News in March after many years. He is a staunch conservative who feels the network has lost its way.

He told CNN's Anderson Cooper on Wednesday that some of Fox's hosts are doing "a great grave disservice to our country."

He said Fox became a "destructive propaganda machine" with the rise of Donald Trump.

"I saw, in my view, Fox - particularly the primetime hosts - attacking our constitutional order, the rule of law, the Justice Department, the FBI, Robert Mueller, and oh by the way, the intelligence agencies," he said. "And they're doing it for ratings and profit."

A Fox spokeswoman said the network's original comment about his exit still stands:

"Ralph Peters is entitled to his opinion, despite the fact that he's choosing to use it as a weapon in order to gain attention."

Fox News said in its March statement that it was "extremely proud of our top-rated primetime hosts and all of our opinion programming."
