Few disposal options causes drugs to pile up

FORT WAYNE IN (WANE/CNN) – Though people have unused or expired medications in their homes, police are advising against it. Police say don’t keep old medication around, and don’t throw it out either.

One solution, for people in Indiana, are drug take-back days. The police sponsored program has been very successful and happens twice a year.

The program was created to stop the pills from showing up on the street, landfills and waterways.

However, the problem now is environmental regulations have changed and there is nowhere locally to incinerate all the old prescription meds.

The disposal difficulties have caused everything to pile up

The sheriff's department has been storing 500 garbage bags of the medication in an undisclosed, secure location.

The DEA is stepping in to help supply boxes to pack up the pills and ship them to another location to be destroyed.

Officials are asking people to only turn in pills and powders and to recycle their containers.

To get rid of liquids, officials recommend pouring them into a plastic bag with kitty litter or coffee grounds to absorb the liquid before tossing it out.
