(CNN) – A number of companies and agencies across Europe reported that they were under a cyberattack on Tuesday, including the Chernobyl nuclear site.
The virus reportedly hit systems monitoring radiation at the site of the former nuclear power plant, where computers running Windows were temporarily knocked off-line. The source of the attack is not yet clear.
A statement was released saying that monitoring was being carried out manually. Russian oil and gas company Rosneft and Danish shipping firm Maersk also reported cyberattacks.
In April of 1986, a sudden surge of power during a reactor systems test destroyed a unit of the nuclear power station at Chernobyl, Ukraine, located in the former Soviet Union.
The deadly accident and the fire that resulted released massive amounts of radioactive material into the environment.
