'Dork' evades capture

BECKER, MN (WCCO/CNN) - Dork has become a village idiot, of sorts, in Minnesota.

An emu named Dork got loose and has evaded capture, despite multiple sightings.

"They said a little bit ago he was at County Road 50 and County Road 11," Tom Berry, Dork's owner said. "Cruising around looking, seeing where he is and checking the last sighting."

The elusive bird has become quite a local celebrity. Dork sightings are posted on social media, and he has his own Facebook page. Several sightings, some of them up close, are reported.

A team even had a rope on Dork at one point, but he still managed to get away.

There are also T-shirts and the local newspaper is using Dork's likeness to entice advertisers.

"It's really taken on a life of its own, Becker police chief Brent Baloun said. "We know it's kind of rallying point for the community."

Berry is concerned Dork will have trouble finding food if he continues to evade capture.

"The green is going away, the corn in the field is gone or it's dried up, so he's getting hungry," Berry said.

He hopes that a lack of food might even help lead to Dork's capture, as he can be lured with dog food.

"You take an ice cream bucket with some dry dog food in it and rattle it and set it down and see if you can attract him," Berry said. "As soon as he starts repeating that and coming back, we got him. Then the old boy's days of wandering around are done."

Berry also thinks Dork might be out looking for his Geek.

"Geek and Dork were male and female, and Geek died three years or so ago, so he is on his own now," Berry said. "He's a bachelor. He is looking for a female emu. They are somewhat social, but who knows?"
