(CNN) – The fleet of Delta Airlines is expanding. The Atlanta-based carrier announced on Thursday that it will purchase up to 200 Airbus A321neo jetliners.
Delta will start taking delivery of 100 jets beginning in 2020. The airline holds options for buying another 100.
The new 197-seat airliner will help Delta offer bigger single-aisle airplanes on many domestic routes and shorter international flights. It will also help the airline retire many of its aging airplanes.
Delta says the new airplanes will consume 40 percent less fuel per passenger than the airplanes they are replacing. The deal is a blow to Boeing that hoped to sell its 737 MAX 10 Airliners to Delta.
