Daughter of man who allegedly encased boy in concrete testifies about abuse

WICHITA, KS (KSNW/CNN) - A man accused of killing his girlfriend's 3-year-old son, Evan Brewer, appeared in a court on Monday.

The boy's body was found encased in concrete in September 2017 in the home his mother and her boyfriend shared.

Miranda Miller waived her preliminary hearing and testified against Stephen Bodine.

Both were charged with the child's first-degree murder in December.

She said Bodine killed her son Evan, but she also admitted partial responsibility.

Miller testified she took meth and other drugs daily with Bodine both before and after her son's body was discovered encased in concrete.

Bodine's daughter also took the stand and described a pattern of abuse.

"He had put his foot on my head on a heat register, and the heat register had given me a burn on my face, and my grandmother ended up actually taking care of it," Samantha Johnson said.

"And you still have that scar today?" the lawyer asked.

"Yes," she said.

A detective told the court police have hours of video recordings from Bodine's home.

Prosecutors showed images from those videos that show Evan bound in the basement.

Miranda Miller's trial is set for May 21.

It will be up to a judge to decide if there is enough evidence for Bodine to go to trial.

Evan was the grandson of former Wichita mayor and gubernatorial candidate Carl Brewer.
