Cigarette suspected in blaze at Arkansas gas pump

STUTTGART, AR (KARK/CNN) - For some it's a mundane task, the process of filling your car with gasoline. But a video shows the danger of doing so.  A video shows a fire sparking at the VP Racing Fuels gas station in Stuttgart.

The fire moves from the car to the pump. The fire’s spark is believed to be a cigarette,KARK reported. "I see those kinds of videos a lot, but never one this close to home though,” Charles Anderson said.  Anderson services and sells fire extinguishers.

He says he's even more cautious now when he fills up his truck. "Everybody is warned about these things all the time but nobody seems to care,” Anderson said.

In the video the car is driven away, and the flames are quickly put out. "Any kind of little spark can set a gas fire off like that,” Anderson said.

The fire department was called that afternoon. "It really opens your eyes and makes you think,” Stuttgart Fire Department Chief Jimmy Cason said.

The fire chief says there are safety guidelines to follow when pumping gas, like not smoking or using a lighter. The fire department reminds folks that as we approach the colder months of the year, to turn your car off before getting out and pumping gas. "There is a reason the signs are there posted for your safety," Cason said.

As the video shows, it’s an everyday task, but extremely dangerous. "I'll be more aware of who is around me when I'm pumping gas,” Anderson said.

As for the gas pump, there wasn't any major damage done, it is now back up and running.
