LA PLATA, MD (WJLA/CNN) - A camel trampled and bit a 57-year-old circus worker on Friday.

He suffered severe head and leg wounds and was flown by helicopter to the hospital from Charles County Fairgrounds, police said.

But his injuries were not believed to be a threat to his life. The circus in Maryland has been shut down due to a permitting issue, WJLA reported.

Fellow circus workers were going to visit the man in the hospital before traveling to Virginia for another stop of the Lewis and Clark Circus.
