Bear from New York climbs tree in New Jersey backyard

FAIR LAWN, NJ (WCBS/CNN) - A bear from New York caused quite a scene in New Jersey Friday.

It climbed a tree in the backyard of a residential area, and would not come down.

The bear caused quite the raucous in the usually quiet town.

For hours, the 130-pound bear plopped on the tree branch, smack dab in the middle of homes and office buildings near the very busy Fair Lawn Avenue.

People raced over as soon as they got word.

Residents first reported it around 7 30 a.m. and from then it was all hands on deck.

Dozens of staff members from animal control, New Jersey Fish and Wild Life, plus police and firefighters all teamed up to get him down safe and sound.

Finally, a wildlife expert loaded up the dart gun with tranquilizer then shot the bear as it slowly crawled down the tree and fell a few feet into a net.

"Everyone coordinated very well and we're just glad that the bear is going to go to back to its natural habitat unhurt and in good condition," Fair Lawn Mayor John Cosgrove said.

The almost 2-year-old bear made his way all the way from New York down Saddle River Trails.

He was first spotted earlier this week in Ridgewood by the county park and even near several schools.

Animal control will be taking the bear to western New Jersey and releasing it back into the wild.
