MADISON, Fla. (WTXL) - Last season, the Madison County Cowboys dropped down to Class 1A, Florida's rural classification which evens the playing field for smaller, rural high schools. It was a good move, as the Cowboys chased their third State Championship in school history.
Madison County fell short of their State Championship dreams last season, losing to eventual State Champ Trenton in the Final Four. The Cowboys lost a lot of talent from that squad, as over a half dozen kids signed college scholarships.
Head Coach Mike Coe confident in this year's group, as he said despite losing more then half of his starters on both offense and defense, there's been a lot of kids that have impressed this spring.
"You just want to come out with no injuries," he said of the goals of spring practice. "We work on individuals, fundamentals, stances, starts, alignments, tackling, and blocking. We are not getting fancy, but just getting better at the little things and toughness."
Coach Coe added the guys are tired of hitting each other, but they'll get the chance to beat up on someone else on Friday. The Cowboys travel to Gainesville to face Eastside High School for their spring game. Kickoff is at 7:00.
