STILLWATER, Okla. (seminoles.com) – Senior Morgane Metraux finished in a tie for fifth place in the individual standings, and the Seminole women’s golf team finished in a tie for 12thplace in the team standings as stroke play in the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship at the Karsten Creek Golf Club came to a close. The Seminoles’ finished only seven strokes out of eighth place which would have advanced them into match play in the championship for the first time in school history. The tied 12th place finish for Florida State at the NCAA Championship Finals is the second best in school history and is the sixth top-15 finish in school history.
Seminole Head Coach Amy Bond, who led the Seminoles into the NCAA Championship Finals for the school-record third consecutive season, became the first coach in school history to lead the Seminoles to three consecutive top-20 national finishes. Florida State finished tied for 12th in 2018, 15th in 2016 and 20th in 2017.
The list of the top eight advancing teams includes UCLA, Alabama, Southern California, Northwestern, Stanford, Duke, Kent State and Arizona. Arizona defeated Baylor in playoff immediately after the conclusion of the fourth round. Those eight will begin three rounds of match play on Tuesday morning to decide the national champion. The winning team will be decided after quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Tuesday and the final match on Wednesday. Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest, who was the runner-up in 2017, won the individual championship with a 7 under par score of 281. She totaled two of her four rounds under par.
“We gave it a go and we came up short,” said Bond. “This team was not supposed to be here and in the last six weeks they finished second at ACC’s, second in the regional and now tied for 12th in the National Championship. We didn’t get off to a good start today but battled back and made it close. I am so super-proud of this group especially the seniors (Kim and Morgane Metraux and Kayla Jones) who helped change the face of our program. I am extremely disappointed – but not because of how we played. I could not be more proud of this group and I am proud to have had the opportunity to be their coach.”
Florida State played a strong fourth round after finishing the first three rounds in ninth place and advancing to the fourth round. It marked the second time in the last three seasons the Seminoles advanced to the fourth round of stroke play and were only one round short of qualifying for match play for the first time in school history.
Morgane Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) earned the best individual finish in the NCAA Championship Finals in school history as she carded a 4 under par score of 68 in the final round and earned a tied for fifth place finish. She totaled scores of 70-72-74-70 for a four-round total of 284. Metraux birdied the final hole of her career and totaled a team-high six birdie. She and was never above par in the final round of her collegiate career.
In earning the ninth top-five finish of her illustrious career at Florida State, Metraux set personal bests for NCAA Championship finish and for a four-round NCAA score. She finished in a tie for 20th place with a 289 score in the 2016 NCAA Championship Finals.
Senior Kim Metraux (Lausanne Switzerland) finished in a tie for 17th place in the individual standings with a 4 over par score of 76. She totaled three birdies in her final round as senior as she earned the 18th top-20 finish of her career. Metraux carded under par scores in the second and third rounds of the championship and earned the best individual finish and total score (289).
FLORIDA STATE NOTES: Florida State participated in the NCAA Championships for the 10thtime in school history…the Seminoles finished in 14th place in 1991; 14th place in 1992; 18thplace in 1994; 13th place in 1999; 19th place in 2003; 19th place in 2004; 16th place in 2006; a school-best 10th place in 2010; 15th place in 2016, tied for 20th in 2017 and tied for 12th in 2018…Florida State is one of three ACC teams that advanced to the fourth round of the NCAA Championships along with Duke and Louisville…Kim Metraux carded consecutive under par scores in the second and third rounds of the NCAA Championships for the first time since the second and third rounds of the Fall 2017 Schooner Fall Classic…The 2018 NCAA Tallahassee Regional proved to be one of the toughest of the four regional championships this year – Alabama, Arizona, Florida State, Furman and Washington – all advanced to the fourth round of stroke play at the NCAA Championships…Wake Forest, who defeated Clemson in a playoff to advance out of the Tallahassee Regional, finished tied for 15th in the NCAA Championships but did not advance on a tiebreaker…NCAA Championship Finals Breakdown in the final Top 15 – Tallahassee (five of six), Stanford (four of six), Madison (three of six), Austin (three of six)…six of the top seven individual golfers (Cheyenne Knight, Alabama; Jennifer Kupcho, Wake Forest; Bianca Pagdanganan, Arizona; Lauren Stephenson, Alabama; Kim Metraux, Florida State and Kristen Gillman, Alabama) after three rounds of play in the NCAA Championship Finals also came from the Tallahassee Regional Championship.
