STILLWATER, Okla. (seminoles.com) – Senior Kim Metraux is in a tie for fifth place in the individual standings, and the Seminoles women’s golf team is in ninth place in the team standings after the first three rounds of the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship at Karsten Creek Golf Club. With their ninth place standing, the Seminoles have advanced to the fourth round of the championship and will play on Monday with the opportunity to advance to the eight-team match play portion of the event which begins on Tuesday. The top eight teams in the standings following Monday’s round will advance to match play, which will determine the national champion in the finals on Wednesday.
It marks the second time in the last three seasons the Seminoles have advanced to the fourth round of stroke play at the National Championship Finals. The Seminoles also advanced to the final round of stroke play in 2016. Florida State enters Monday’s fourth round only three strokes behind Kent State, four strokes behind Stanford and five strokes behind Duke for the one of the coveted final eight spots in the team standings.
Florida State advanced to the fourth round of stroke play as it maintained its’ top-15 standing in the team standings after the first three rounds of the event. The Seminoles were led in the third round by Kim Metraux who carded a 1 under par 71 to finish with her second consecutive below par round of the tournament. She has a 3 under par total of 213 for the first three rounds of the tournament. Senior Morgane Metraux is in a tie for 10th place in the individual standings with a three round total of even par 216.
Florida State enters Monday’s final round of stroke play looking to earn the best team finish in the NCAA Championship Finals in school history. The Seminoles’ 2010 team finished in 10thplace in the team standings at the Country Club of Wilmington.
“It rained this morning, the wind conditions are tough and the course was pretty wet when we started,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “The girls played with a lot of heart today and I was very proud of that. They didn’t get a lot a sleep last night because of the late finish and our early start. One of our goals entering the week was to make it to match play; we have put ourselves in a good position for a good round tomorrow.”
Kim Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) carded a 71 in the third round and begins play in the final round of stroke play with a 213 total. She is only four strokes behind the individual lead of Alabama’s Cheyenne Knight as she bids to become the first individual champion in school history. Metraux is also in position to earn the top individual finish in school history in the NCAA Championship Finals. Four-time All-American Caroline Westrup finished in a school-record best tied for 12th place in 2007.
Metraux continued her stellar play in her third career NCAA Championship event as she carded her second straight round at below par after carding a 69 in the second round. She totaled four birdies and was a total of two strokes under par on her final 12 holes of the round. Metraux closed as well as any player in the tournament with two birdies and five holes scored at par on her final seven holes of her round.
“My game felt good again today and overall it was very solid,” said Metraux. “I am really excited for tomorrow. Our team is in great position and it would mean so much to all of to make match play. We’ve have all worked really hard; I am confident in my teammates and excited to get back out on the course.”
Metraux’s last two rounds – 69 and 70 – are her best two rounds in three career NCAA Championship Finals appearances. Prior to her score of 69 in the second round, she had not carded a score better than 75 in her first seven NCAA Championship Finals rounds.
Morgane Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) carded a 72 in the third round and is in a tie for 10th place in the individual standings with an even par score of 216 through the first three rounds of the championship. She carded 16 of 18 holes at par as she carded her third consecutive score of 74 of better in the last three days.
Metraux is looking for her second career top-20 finish in the NCAA Championship Finals after finishing in a tie for 10th place in in the individual standings in the championship in 2016.
Sophomore Amanda Doherty (Atlanta, Ga.) carded a 76 in the third round and is in a tie for 67th place in the individual standings with a 227 total for the first three days of the event.
The Seminoles will play with Stanford and Kent State beginning at 2:10 p.m. (ET) from the 10thhole.
The fourth round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship will be televised live on the Golf Channel between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. The individual champion and top eight teams that will advance to match play – including Florida State – will be featured on the broadcast.
FLORIDA STATE NOTES: Tomorrow, May 21, is Kim Metraux’s 23rd birthday…Kim Metraux’s 69 in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Golf Championships tied the school record for a single round score in the Championship Finals…she now shares the record with Caroline Westrup (in 2007, twice) and Jessica Negron (in 2010)…the three-round school record score in the NCAA Championship Finals is 208 (69-69-70) by Caroline Westrup in 2007 at Daytona Beach, Fla…Kim Metraux is just the third player in school history to finish under par in the first three rounds of the NCAA Championship Finals…Caroline Westrup holds the record with a 208 total for three rounds (2007) while Maria Salinas finished with a 213 total as a senior (2012)…Karen Stupples, an on-course reporter for the Golf Channel, played in the 1994 NCAA Championship Finals for Florida State…she helped the Seminoles to an 18th place team finish as she finished in a tie for 64th place in the individual standings with scores of 77-76-83-84 for a total of 320…Seminole Head Coach Amy Bond earned All-Region honors in 1999 and was Florida State’s top finisher in the 1999 NCAA Championship Finals in Tulsa, Okla.
