TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Stan Wilcox announced today that Florida State has extended the contract with head basketball coach Leonard Hamilton through the 2019-20 season. The Seminoles' leader in all-time wins, Hamilton's current agreement was set to expire after the 2018-19 season.
“Leonard Hamilton is an outstanding basketball coach. His success coupled with the type of student-athletes we are currently attracting show we are on the right track,” said Wilcox. “This extension will provide him the opportunity to reach both of our goals for the program which are annual NCAA Tournament appearances and success advancing in the Tournament.
“Coach Hamilton has consistently produced student-athletes we are proud to call alumni of Florida State University, and teams that compete at the highest level both in the ACC and nationally,” said FSU President John Thrasher. “I am fully supportive of this contract extension and I look forward to working with Coach Hamilton in the coming years.”
Hamilton, the ACC Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2012, is the winningest coach in school history and is the eighth winningest coach in ACC history. He has amassed 282 victories in his 15-year career at FSU and 482 career collegiate wins. Since the 2005-06 season, the Seminoles are the third winningest program in the ACC with 259 wins. FSU won the ACC Championship in 2012.
“I am pleased with the confidence that Stan and President Thrasher have shown in my staff and me,” said Hamilton. “The support our program has received in recent years has been a significant part of our success. I am looking forward to building on it next year and in future years.”
Under Hamilton, the Seminoles have won at least 20 games in 10 of his 15 years and have advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times in the last nine seasons, including earning a No. 3 seed and advancing to the NCAA Round of 32 in 2017.
Hamilton has been named National Coach of the Year three times, ACC Coach of the Year twice, and Big East Coach of the Year twice. He is the only person to earn Coach of the Year honors multiple times in both the ACC and the Big East.
