Florida State Softball Receives Key To The City

TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) -  It's been a little over a month since the Florida State softball team made history, winning their first National Championship by sweeping Washington in the Women's College World Series Championship series.

Since then, they've gotten to be part of a lot of really cool stuff like being nominated for an ESPY, throwing out the first pitch at a Cubs game, and now, they can add receiving the key to the city to that list.

This morning, Tallahassee mayor Andrew Gillum gave head coach Lonni Alameda the key to the city, the highest honor the Mayor can give a citizen, for their history making accomplishment.

"You work hard everyday to make sure you do represent the community," she said. "When you're reaching those honors, we are doing things right. That's what we want to do. That's on and off the field. I think on the field is sometimes a bigger picture for us because that really relates to how we carry ourselves on the field. Knowing that people in the community see that and support that and enjoy that, then they truly enjoy what we do on the field when we're playing softball the game we love."

Alameda added she has a little bit of a break in August, which is when she'll take time to digest everything that's happened in the past couple of months.
