Softball Takes Two From Savannah State Saturday

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 6) – The Florida A&M Women’s Softball teamopened their three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series with Savannah State with a doubleheader sweep, 1-0 and 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the FAMU Softball Complex.

FAMU (14-22, 5-0 MEAC) eked out a 1-0 win in the opener, thanks to Jamesia Stoudemire’s RBI single in the bottom of sixth inning, which scored Shakayla Nixon, who reached base on a fielding error.

Stoudemire had one of FAMU’s two hits in Saturday’s Game One, along with Alexis Day.

Kyaira Brown (9-8) and Savannah’s Faith Dickerson (3-14) turned in a sizzling pitching duel, allowing a combined three hits, striking out seven.

Brown checked the Tigers on one hit through seven innings, striking out five against no walks.

@ In the second game, the Rattlers built a 5-0 lead by the sixth inning on 10 hits, paced by Stoudemire, Shakayla Nixon and Taylor Rosier. Stoudemire drove in three runs, while Shakayla Nixon and Alexis Day drove in a run each.

FAMU scored single runs in the first and second innings, before scoring three runs in the sixth for a 5-0 lead.

Savannah State’s Stacie Smith put the Tigers on the board in the top of the seventh, belting a two-run homer off FAMU freshman pitcher Brandice Boatwright (5-5), who scattered four hits, struck out five and walked one in seven innings.
