Softball Sweeps MEAC Doubleheader From NCCU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Mar. 23) – The FAMU Women’s Softball teamsuccessfully opened Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play here Saturday afternoon with 3-2 and 4-2 wins in a doubleheader sweep of visiting North Carolina Central at the FAMU Softball Complex.

FAMU (10-21, 2-0 MEAC), rode complete game pitching performances from junior Kyaira Brown and freshman Brandice Boatwright to the sweeo of the Eagles (9-17, 0-2 MEAC).

In Game One, Brown (7-8) struck out three and walked two in seven innings, allowing two runs on seven scattered hits, while in Game Two, Boatwright (3-4) struck out five and walked just one, allowing two unearned runs on four hits in seven innings.

In Saturday’s opener, NCCU scored both their runs in the top of the fourth to take a brief 2-1 lead over FAMU, before the Rattlers scratched out single runs in the fifth and sixth to regain control.

Tyra Bowers had one of FAMU’s three hits, driving in a pair of runs. Brown and Hera Varmah each had hits, with Varmah’s being a triple. She also scored two runs.

Saturday’s second game saw FAMU take a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs scored in the second, adding two more tallies in the fourth for a 4-0 advantage.

The Eagles did plate a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but were handcuffed by Boatwright’s pitching for most of the game.

Freshman Kimaya Watkins led FAMU’S eight hit attack with two hits and an RBI, whie Varmah had a single and two RBIs. Alexis Blasingane had a single and the other RBI for FAMU.

WHAT ON DECK: FAMU closes the MEAC series with NCCU Sunday at 12 noon.
