FAMU softball opens season with losses to OSU and LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. — The Florida A&M University softball team opened the season on Saturday afternoon with a pair of losses against ranked teams during the first day of the Tigers Softball Classic at Tiger Park.

Florida A&M (0-2) began the day with a 21-0 loss to No. 13 Oklahoma State in five innings and concluded the day with an 8-0 loss to No. 11 LSU in five innings.

How It Happened – Game 1
Oklahoma State struck for one run in the first inning, three in the second and exploded for five in the third to grab a 9-0 lead through three innings.

The Cowgirls put the game away with four runs in the fourth and eight in the fifth inning.

Inside the Numbers
> Florida A&M finished with no runs on no hits and did not strand a runner, while committing four errors
> Brandice Boatwright surrendered 21 runs (18 earned) on 17 hits, with seven walks and one strikeout
> Oklahoma State registered 21 runs on 17 hits and left five on base
> Michaela Richbourg led OSU at the plate by going 2-for-4, with four RBIs and three runs scored
> Sydney Pennington and Chyenne Factor each registered three hits
> Kelly Maxwell pitched a perfect game, facing the minimum 15 batters, and also finished with five strikeouts

How It Happened – Game 2
In the nightcap, LSU scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and added to the advantage with one run in the second to grab a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers closed out the game with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth for the 8-0 victory.

> Florida A&M finished with no runs, one hit, one error and stranded three on base
> Kenyaamari Jones went 1-for-2 at the plate for the Lady Rattlers
> Nadia Zenteno pitched 4.2 innings to take the loss as she gave up eight runs (six earned) on six hits, walked six and struck out one
> LSU registered eight runs on six hits and left four on base
> Raeleen Gutierrez led LSU at the plate by going 2-for-3, with one run scored
> Georgia Clark and Taylor Tidwell each registered a pair of RBIs
> Shelbi Sunseri picked up the win in five innings pitched. She allowed one hit, one walk and fanned six

Florida A&M concludes play in the Tiger Softball Classic on Sunday with a pair of games. The Lady Rattlers will meet Oklahoma State at 11:30 a.m. and end the tournament with a 2 p.m. contest against LSU.
