TALLAHASSEE, FL. (WTXL) - The Chiles boys soccer team won the Class 4A State Championship in 2015. Since then, they haven't even made the postseason.
This year, the Timberwolves have at least made it to the postseason, and on Friday night, they looked to win the 4A-2 District Championship against rival Leon.
The Lions took control in the first half, but Will Johnson headed in the equalizer in the second half. After regulation, and two overtime periods, this one came down to penalty kicks, with Chiles coming out on top 4-3.
"To see them fight back and to scrap against a very, very good team, it shows more than just natural ability," said head coach Bryan Wilkinson. "It shows the chemistry and the hard work to do well and I'm just real proud of them. Even though both teams are going to Regionals, this is a big step for us as far as motivation and the opportunity to play at home now in the next level. It's exciting."
In Class 2A, Florida High beat Gadsden County 2-0 for the District 2 title, while Maclay handled St. John Paul II for the 1A-1 crown.
