INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Carlos Munoz became the first driver this month to top 230 mph during practice for the Indianapolis 500.

The Andretti Autosport driver finished with the fastest lap Wednesday at 230.121 mph.

Townsend Bell, who is driving for Dreyer and Reinbold Racing-Kingdom Racing, was second at 228.969. Tony Kanaan, a Chip Ganassi driver, was third at 228.172.

There were two big crashes.

In the first hour, Helio Castroneves' car hit the first turn wall and wound up going airborne after rolling down the track between the first two turns. He was back on the track in a different car in the final minutes of practice. In the final hour, Pippa Mann spun into one wall and hit the attenuator at the back end of pit lane but was not seriously hurt.
