TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 29) – The Bethune-Cookman Wildcat Softball team completed a three-game series sweep of rival Florida A&M Sunday, winning a 7-0 decision to lock up the Southern Division title of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Bethune-Cookman (27-24, 12-3 MEAC) took advantage of FAMU fielding miscues to score single runs in the first and fifth innings for a 2-0 lead, then rode the pitching of starter Alexis Bermudez (10-9), and reliever Destiny Enriquez, who combined to scatter eight FAMU hits in the shutout win.
Bermudez, who earned the decision in all three games over the weekend, worked three complete innings, before being lifted in the fourth for Enriquez, as each allowed four hits, causing FAMU to strand nine runners on the day.
B-CU plated a single run in the sixth to extend their lead to 3-0, then struck for four runs in the top of the seventh to close out the scoring.
Jacki Smith led B-CU with three hits, while Taylor Sherritt and Iesha Waters each had two hits. Waters belted a two-run double to key the Wildcats’ four-run seventh, while Moriah Davis and Brianna Sanders each had an RBI Sunday.
FAMU pitcher Kyaira Brown (14-11) took the loss Sunday, allowing three earned runs of the seven scored, on nine hits, with three strikeouts against two walks in seven innings.
Jamesia Stoudemire led FAMU with three hits, with Shayla Boyd and Tyra Bowers each finishing with two hits.
WHAT’S NEXT: FAMU (20-27, 11-4 MEAC) will be off until Wednesday, May 9, when they open the 2018 MEAC Softball Tournament in Ormond Beach, Florida, with a 3:00 p.m. opening round game. Pairings will be announced next week.
