TALLAHASSEE, FL (#WTXLDigital) - November 20, 2014 will go down in history at Florida State University. Just after midnight, a gunman opened fire at one of the busiest places on campus.
Myron May entered Strozier library and shot two students and one employee. The FSU Police Department as well as the Tallahassee Police Department responded and returned fire at May. May was killed outside the library just minutes after shooting the victims.
Strozier Library was closed immediately following the shooting, and classes were cancelled. Vigils were held the morning of as well as later that evening.
At that evening's vigil, FSU President John Thrasher spoke highly of the student body and the university in their handling of the situation.
The library was reopened the morning after the shooting. Was opening the library a little over 24 hours after the shooting too soon?
According to student Bryson Adams, it was not. Adams was one of the many students who went to the library the day after, and he said he felt very safe.
He was moved by the banner everyone signed for the victims and officers involved.
Student Kiley Williams feels the same way. She says that Strozier is a necessary resource for students to succeed academically. Since Strozier itself was not rendered unusable or unsafe, she thinks it was not necessary to keep it closed due to emotional duress.
Williams got right back to studying in Strozier Friday morning, preparing for her finals.
Overall, November 20th was an emotional day, but having the library reopen the next day made it possible for campus life to go back to normal quickly.
