TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Women came together in Tallahassee to recruit, educate, and empower one another. Habitat for Humanity brought together over 300 female volunteers for the Women Build 2016.

As apart of the initiative, a home was entirely funded and built by women of the Big Bend. According to the Habitat for Humanity of the Big Bend's website, nearly 30 percent of all households in Florida are female headed. This number reaches 49 percent when focusing on the working poor.

Affordable housing is an issue faced by many of these households and that's why local organizers say projects like these are so important. Funds raised from the event went to cover building cost materials. Events for the initiative began back in April with the Lowes Power Tool Clinic geared toward tool safety for women.
