TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) – To help victims of Hurricane Hermine more easily reach family, friends and other important contacts, Verizon has deployed a Wireless Emergency Communication Center (WECC) in Tallahassee.
WECC's are generator powered mobile units that have device charging, computer workstations, and devices to contact loved ones. The mobile center has been put in the Beef O' Brady's parking lot located at 1800 Thomasville Road.
Verizon also said the WECC will provide teams of technicians available to help fix and charge up phone batteries that survived the storm.
"Many residents otherwise have been completely cut off from their loved ones and other important contacts such as their insurance companies, so the ability to make a call, no matter how brief, can be invaluable," said Roger Tang, president of the south east market for Verizon.
Verizon has also opened its store in Tallahassee located at 6721 Thomasville Road to provide free local and long distance calls, phone charging, and phone fixing to all local residents regardless of their carrier.
Verizon Wireless and emergency officials urged residents to use their wireless phones only when necessary so the network will not be overloaded for emergency workers who are primarily using wireless communications in their rescue and restoration operations.
