TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Unfamiliar sounds in Tallahassee are the trucks spreading sand on the streets and bridges in anticipation of a winter storm.
Tuesday night was the first time the Tallahassee has used a sand truck, which they got in November.
Around 40 bridges were sanded Tuesday night because bridges are usually the first roads to freeze. The cold weather can freeze both above and below the bridge.
City crews tell us that because of that fact it is extremely important to make sure the bridges are well covered with sand to prevent drivers sliding on icy roads.
If you are out driving, please be aware of the crews who will be working.
