LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL) - Community members are invited to honor a former deputy killed in the line of duty.

According to the Georgia State patrol, on February 25 Deputy Chris Butler was on his way to a domestic call and was involved in two-vehicle crash with a semi-truck.

The semi's driver, Robbie Register, 29, of Tifton, pulled the deputy from his burning patrol car.

Butler was taken to the South Georgia Medical Center in critical condition and died shortly thereafter.

The Planting Brotherhood Project is planting a tree in honor of Butler.

The ceremony is today, Monday, at 8:30 a.m. at the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office headquarters on Prison Farm Road.
