TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Tallahassee Police Department is warning residents about a new scam.

Authorities are saying that victims are getting a phone call from a number they don't recognize.

The scammer proceeds to call the victim by name and tell them that a relative has been injured in an accident, but that police were not called.

The victim is then told that their loved one is being held hostage at gunpoint unless money is paid to the scammer.

"Anyone who's calling you and demanding money over the phone and there's an emergency to it, stop right there. Hang up the phone and call the police. Tell them the phone number you got the phone call from and move on," says David Northway, the Public Information Officer, Tallahassee Police Department.
