THOMAS COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL) - A Thomas County teacher is being recognized as one of the top ranked educators in the state.

Nancy Rogers has been named a finalist for the Georgia Teacher of the Year award.

Being ranked at the top of Georgia teachers is nothing new for Rogers. She was Thomas County School District's Teacher of the the Year in 2017 and 2010, and was a finalist in 2012 for state Teacher of the Year.

But each time receiving this honor is special for her.

Rogers teaches eighth- and ninth-grade English language arts to gifted students at Thomas County Middle School.

Rogers says she remembers the teachers who made an impact on her life, so she strives to be that for every child that walks through her classroom door.

This week is milestone test week. Rogers says she has done her job if students are better people when they leave her class at the end of the school year.

She grew up in Sale City in Mitchell County and earned an undergraduate degree in English and a master's in secondary English at Valdosta State University.

Making an impact on southwest Georgia means a lot to her.

"I just truly believe that my talent for teaching is God given," she said. "I believe that what I do is my calling, this isn't a career choice. I made it a calling. I gave up a lucrative job for teaching and i've never regretted it."
