Tallahassee Woman Arrested for Tampering with Evidence in Fatal Hit-and-Run

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A Tallahassee woman is behind bars after police say she tried to hide the clothing of one the primary suspects in a fatal hit-and-run involving a Rickards High School student.  

The Tallahassee Police Department said that they were at the Capitol Regional Medical Center on Monday following up on a fatal hit-and-run crash that had killed 17-year-old Tyriq Roberts earlier that morning.

They said that they were interviewing a prime suspect who was a patient at the hospital. While they were talking to him, a woman, Destiny Nixon, was also in the room.

Officers asked the suspect of the hit-and-run where all of his clothing was so that it could be impounded, to which they answered that they didn't know.

As one officer began to brief the other on the details involving the case, they noted that Nixon seemed to be eavesdropping on their conversation as she walked behind them. 

At some point, Nixon left the suspect's room with her jacket zipped up, which police said was previously unzipped. As she tried to walk by, they noticed that she as walking like she wanted to hide the front of her jacket.

Officers tried to speak to her, but she turned away and tried to go into a treatment room. They asked her what she as hiding in her jacket and she replied, "nothing."

As Nixon turned away again, officers said that they saw some gray fabric sticking out from beneath her jacket, noting that the suspect had previously had on a gray t-shirt. 

Police said that they were certain that Nixon was trying to hide and remove potential evidence. They arrested Nixon and found two black socks hidden in her purse. 

A witness also testified that they had seen Nixon hide the clothes.

She has been charged with tampering with physical evidence.
