TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Tallahassee Police arrested a man Friday, following the death of a two year old.
According to police, officers responded to a home Thursday night in the 800 block of California Street. When they arrived, the two year old was not breathing. The toddler later died at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
Initial evidence led officers to suspect the boy died from child abuse, leading TPD's Violent Crimes investigators to begin an investigation into the death.
Officers say Woods was watching his girlfriend's two-year-old son, when Woods says the child started vomiting. Around 1am, he called 911.
Officers brought the toddler to the hospital, and after he died, a preliminary autopsy showed the child had bruises and belt marks and died as a result of trauma to the head.
A neighbor told police that the toddler's crying could be heard just before midnight, and then they heard a hitting noise, which was when officers say the crying stopped.
The toddler's mother reportedly said she knew Woods had hit her son with a belt before.
Woods is charged with first degree murder as well as aggravated child abuse.
